What Would Email Be Like if it Were Invented Today?

For the longest time, I felt that email in general needed to be revolutionized with the advances in technology over the past 10-20 years.  With the real time use of Twitter and various instant messenger programs, email seems almost outdated in that you can’t always get a real time result.  You have to forumulate the email, send the email, wait on the server to send, and then wait for the end users server to receive.  Seems kinda old school, huh?  We live in a fast paced, real time society; why should we continue to use something that does not help us achieve the same fast paces, real time results?
